XV International
Symposium on Tardigrada
This was the second time when a tardigrade
conference was held in Poland. The last Polish meeting took place in
1977, also in
Kraków.
The Symposium was attended by 119 participants, including 13
accompanying persons, representing 18 countries from four continents
(Asia, Europe, North and South America).
During the congress 52 talks and (in nine sessions) and 69 posters (in
two two-day sessions) were presented. The topics discussed at the
Symposium included taxonomy, phylogeny and evolution, biodiversity and
biogeography, ecology and behaviour, omics and physiology (including
cryptobiosis), anatomy, development and reproduction, astrobiology and
emerging methods.
For the first time, Young Scientist Awards were given in two fields,
zoology and physiology, and included gold and silver medals for the best
oral and poster presentation, respectively. The gold medal in zoology
was awarded to Dr. Matteo Vecchi (Finland)
and the gold medal in physiology went to Napat
Emdee, MSc (Denmark). The silver medal in zoology was given to
Kamil Janelt, MSc (Poland) and the silver
medal in physiology was awarded to Dr. Ana Lyons
(USA).
